Know the Signs Campaign to Change Direction for Mental Healthfilmstrip adprint

Approximately 5 million or 18.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older—about one in five adults— has a mental health condition in a given year (SAMHSA, 2014). The United States has increasingly recognized the prevalence of mental health challenges, the need to eliminate stigma, and the benefits of mental health treatment. Indeed, First Lady Michelle Obama recently endorsed a national campaign called Know the Five Signs, through the Campaign to Change Direction. This campaign was co-organized by the volunteer organization, Give an Hour and many other organizations and groups.

Change Direction NH is a new initiative and part of the national public awareness campaign and effort to eliminate stigma about mental illness. Change Direction NH will officially be launched on Monday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Representatives Hall in Concord, NH.

Nearly one in every five people, or 42.5 million American adults, has a diagnosable mental health condition. Half of all lifetime cases of mental disorders begin by age 14. Often our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even family members are suffering emotionally and don’t recognize the symptoms or are heistant to ask for help.

The Five Signs are not the only indicators of emotional health challenges but are signals that someone is likely having some challenges. Experiencing any number of the five signs could also be a signal that someone is in emotional pain and might need help.
